Bookish Thoughts

This isn't a book review but I want to tell you about the books I read as I read them. I have a section on the side bar that shows you what I am currently reading. I am involved in a church women's book group that reads and discusses a book once a month. They are not particularly church related, usually, but the last month's and this month's are by LDS authors. We read Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis at the beginning of the year and it is an amazing book although I still have to finish it. :)

This last month we read "The Wednesday Letters" by Jason Wright. Dumb. He also wrote the Christmas Jars. The woman who picked this book hadn't even read it yet but heard it was good. She thought it was pretty dumb too. It was one of those "cute" stories that is supposed to give you warm fuzzies. I didn't like his style of writing and I thought some of the things that occurred to the characters were a little far fetched. It had a "cute" message, just was not my kind of book.

This month we are going to read "Before the Dawn" by Dean Hughes. I think this will be a much better book. I have read a few of Hughes' books such as the Children of the Promise series. I won't be paying $20 for this book like I did "The Wednesday Letters". I have this book on hold at the library. I will let you know if I like it.

One book that I am excited to read is for the month of April- "Thomas Jefferson: Draftsman of a Nation" by Natalie S. Bober. She wrote a book on Abigail Adams that we read last year. I thouroughly enjoyed that book. If you want to learn more about Abigail Adams in an easy to read, historical fiction type format, you will like this book. Abigail Adams was an amazing woman and she had to provide for and care for her family almost completely by herself. Her husband would be gone abroad for years at times, fighting for America's freedom. I'm excited to read about Thomas Jefferson.

And finally, I am excited to read "Kite Runner" in the summer. I've heard this is an excellent book and I have been wanting to read it for quite some time.

What are you reading?? I love getting good book recommendations.

  1. That looks like a great selection. I love C.S. Lewis.

I haven't even heard of any of the others, except for 'Kite Runner' (my sister says it's good!) but I'd like to read the Abigail Adams and Thomas Jefferson books.

As for what I'm reading...? I am really trying to get through the Book of Mormon by May 10 (I think that's the date???), so I spend most of my reading time on that.

Otherwise, I'm reading books about health and children's health and such. What I really want to be reading is HISTORY. My passion. :)

    Thanks for sharing!!

  2. Reading: Wallace Stegner's Crossing to Safety.

Just finished: Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen and Light on the Snow by Anita Shreve

I enjoyed Mere Christianity, but it is a heavy book to read. For such a short volume, it can take awhile to get through. :) You really need to rent & watch Shadowlands now that you've read some C.S. Lewis.
