Run, Forrest (Alicia), Run

It is time for a running post. I will probably have a few more of these in the future as training gets more intense. Let me tell you how it is going so far.

It is Hard. The end.

Alright, I will tell you a little more about what I have discovered about running.

1. The heat makes running a billion times harder to do. Thank goodness for a cold June! I think my running enthusiasm has gone down as the temperature outside has gone up.

2. I would pick running 7 miles stroller/ childless over running 3 miles pushing a stroller. I do NOT like running a pushing a stroller.

3. I think I like running without my IPOD. Although the music does motivate me/ distract me from stopping for walking breaks.

4. You really need to stretch well after running.

5. My favorite run so far was with Koby up Provo canyon- nice temperature, shaded, beautiful, good company.

6. The easiest 3 miler I have run was while reading "The Host" by Sephanie Meyer on the treadmill. I don't recommend it though- I about killed myself tripping a few times. It didn't stop me from reading.

7. Good shoes are a must! They are usually 1 to 1 1/2 sizes larger than what you normally wear. Paying a little extra at a real running store to be properly fitted is so worth it.

8. I gave up on trying to cover might lily white legs with running pants. I pulled out the short shorts and I am not turning back. It is to darn hot. I haven't pulled out the tank tops, yet.

9. Marathon training takes up a ton of time. I knew this before I committed to doing this, but I just don't know when I will do another marathon. I definitely want to do several 1/2 marathons. It is so hard to get up in the morning to go running when you are up several times in the night with a baby.

10. I more often than not live in t-shirts and ponytails. Since I am always going for a run (so it seems) I don't get dressed for the day very often. :)

I map my runs on Google Earth. It is quite fun. I guess to sum it all up, I am having a harder time doing my short runs. I love doing the long runs. I am also a slow runner. I am ok with that. So here is a sample of my marathon training:

I run every Tues., Wed., and Thurs. (short runs) and a long run every Sat. I am supposed to do cross training every Mon. I have been doing Yoga but it can be anything from swimming, biking, weights, whatever.

My next couple of weeks look like this:

Tues/ Wed/ Thurs: 3 miles/ 4 miles/ 3 miles and a long run Sat. of 9 miles
Next week- Tues/ Wed/ Thurs: 3 miles/ 5 miles/ 3 miles and Sat. run of 10 miles

The next week is similar with our Freedom Run 10K on the 4th of July!

The runs accumulate to a 10 miler on Wed. and a 20 mile long run on Sat. about 3 weeks before the marathon and then the mileage decreases as your body "rests" to gear up for the marathon. I am using Hal Higdon's marathon training schedule. Fun, fun, eh? I really love the blog Marathon Mommies. Those women are so amazing and they keep me motivated. They are very inspiring. There are other people that inspire me like the woman I saw running up the same hill I huff and puff up. She was running a good pace and she was disabled. She had to swing her legs around to just get them in front of her. She was amazing and I gave myself a little chastisement for complaining (in my head) about running sometimes. I should be so grateful that I can run!

  1. You are AMAZING. Seriously. I am so impressed. I kind of want to try taking up running after I pop my kid out. We'll see how motivated I am when I actually have to get up and go.

Also, have you ever tried mapmyrun.com? If so, what do you like better about Google Earth?

Also, what kind of jogging stroller do you have??

Also, I will call you today. We need to hang out. Hopefully sooner rather than later. :)

  2. wow! I can't believe all of your running :) I'd be happy to be able to walk 3 miles!

Hey, I'd love an invite to your blog before it goes private. Thanks!

  3. Liz- yes I have used Map my run- it is awesome. I can't say I have used it a ton yet- I plan on exploring it more. I think you can only map streets though? I need to check. With google earth you can map a distance anywhere, even through a house or something. :) I run on the canal a lot so it helps to map it on something other than non-road.

I use a Instep Safari Double Stroller- it has a swivel wheel which is awesome. And it is cheap (for a jogging stroller). I got it at Burlington. There are definitely better ones but this one gets the job done.

I am excited to see you!

Mica- I had you down anyway. :)

  4. Nice work running in this INSANE HEAT! I seriously don't even want to leave the house to get the mail, let alone run 7 miles.

You are super women in my book!

  5. Kudos to you! i couldn't run a mile without dieing!! litterally! esopecially in this heat! yesterday Olivia had a parade it was about 1\2 a mile (I didn't know i had to walk with her till i got there!) and i turned around and came back about two minuets into it. it didin't help that Olivia was screaming her head off cuz she needed to pee and she was super tired (she missed her nap yesterday) and we made her "pose" for a picture wich really ticked her off. : )plus the heat! it was a crazy 1\2 hour of waiting and then she was mad that we left early. I just seriously couldn't do it! 'course being 36 weeks preg. doesn't excatly help. anyway good luck with the marathon!

  6. I'm doing the Hal Higdon's training right now as well. Only problem is I haven't signed up/paid for the marathon I'm training for and it's in July! I hit a pretty hard wall around miles 12 and 13 where I totally wanted to quit! But it's sooo much better now. Although just the other day I wasn't able to run in the morning so I ran in the evening and it was the worst run of my training! It was only 9 miles but the heat about killed me. I ran inside and gulped so much liquid I felt sick! If you need a sitter for some of your long runs give me a holler:) Anyways, good luck and have fun!!!

  7. Thanks for the comment. You are doing so great! Running in the heat is hard- shorts/skirt and a tank top is what I muster. I have found that as long as I am out the door by 7:30 I am usually okay heat wise on the weekday runs.

As far as the stroller- I so get you there. I go solo on my long weekend runs, but during the week it is my only option. I just made some looky loos for my girls and man it has made a HUGE difference in their tolerance. Here is the link if you are interested: http://tentenspot.blogspot.com/2006/09/lookie-loos.html

Oh- and then the wall you are hitting. For me, cross training with something totally different gets me over the wall. Biking, swimming, playing soccer with friends, going for a hike. Something to get your body moving differently. To train, you still need to get your miles in, but on the cross training days- explore what you like, do something you have always been interested in but never tried etc. This is just what I do and it has worked for me :)

  9. Alicia, you're doing awesome. I am really so impressed with anyone gutsy enough to train for a marathon. I'm just getting to the point of running 3 miles at a time, and that's a huge accomplishment for me. I've registered for the freedom run 5k, so I'll see you at the finish line. :)

  10. Lish-
You deserve a medal just for running that much! It hurts my knees and back so much, so I just stick with walking (and it's a good day when I can do more than 2 miles). I'm so proud of you!
    Mindy :)
