First Grade started a long time ago but I have to blog about it. Brigg was SO excited for first grade. His teacher is Mrs Ball. I think we lucked out and got the best 1st grade teacher ever. She is a grandma and is so kind with the kids, she really listens to them (which seriously? That is a lot because those kids jabber about nothing) and she is very structured and organized. She has been teaching a long time. Brigg is in class with a few of his friends: Lucas, Easton, and Devin. Of course all the other kids are now his friends. A girl named Rachel has called the last few days, asking to play with Brigg.
I wondered if there would be any kind of adjustment but I didn't notice anything. He loves school, never thought it was too long, says his favorite parts are recess and lunch, loves learning Spanish and even does his homework all by himself (although I have to remind him enough). I asked him if he misses me and and he matter of factly said nope. This doesn't surprise me or hurt my feelings because I was exactly the same way when I was his age. I LOVED school.
I adjusted to him being gone all day quite well. Not that I don't love and miss him, but I find it easier to spend time with the girls and focus on them a bit. For awhile I noticed the house was much cleaner but we have since fallen into our old habits. I also LOVE not having to run him to and from kindergarten and having my days all broken up. I also love that he has the later gator time and goes at 9:15am. LOVE that. Although with that comes 3:30pm school ending time and there isn't much time to do anything else in the afternoon. I'd rather have the later time though.
A quick story. I went to parent back to school night to visit with the teacher and find out the course curriculum, rules and other info. I was there with two other moms and she asked who our kids were. She asked the first two mother and then asked me. When she found out Brigg was my child, she exclaimed "Oh! I love Brigg. He is such a good kid!". She realized that her comment looked kind of weird with the other moms and she covered her tracks by saying, "All your kids are good!". It was pretty funny but I could see she really does like Brigg. She also keeps telling me he is a good reader which is a nice surprise because he was pretty average last year. He definitely improved over the summer. I don't attribute any of his goodness to me but I am very proud to be his mom. Brigg really is such a good kid, he is very friendly and helpful and really tries hard to be a good student. It makes me happy that he is doing so well in school. I almost started crying when he first met his teacher and read a book to her so she could see what reading level he is at. She said he was really good but that he also uses a lot of expression when reading which is great. I almost started crying because I realized he is growing up and I hadn't realized the different improvements he has made. Where did the kid come from?
