A Day in the Life of a Stay at Home Mom: an essay in photos and words

At least it isn't in hen scratches and pantomiming.

Koby officially started his first day working from home on Monday. He spent all day wiring the downstairs rooms for Internet and he set up his pad. Since he will be around home a lot more (not that I will ever see him still), he may at least get to hear what I do all day long. Since I don't really know what I do all day, I decided to document it.

First, here is a grand tour of Koby's new office....

"What the heck are you doing?"

Computers outside the guest bedroom/ office that are waiting for Koby's healing powers.

The Desk.
Pretty sweet setup, eh? Someday he will be grown up enough to get a real desk. We like to send him to the "dungeon" to make money. If he doesn't make enough, we withhold food. It is a great work at home arrangement. I don't know how anyone can work with 3 monitors (he has a 4th when he puts up his laptop too). I guess that is a benefit of being slightly ADD.

After saying goodbye to Koby for the day (and locking him in the dungeon), I figured I needed to clean up the mess. This is the before picture. I didn't get time to take a picture of the 4.678 seconds it was clean. It did improve though.

Brigg stole the camera and took many pictures of random architectural aspects of our abode. I happened to find one of value- evidence of me working hard.

I should have taken a before picture of Brigg's room. It looks much better. He cleaned it mostly by himself. I really need to work on his dresser top. ;)

Proud of his work.

There is always room for improvement. I don't care anymore- I've organized his closet and toys and it only lasts for a day, if that. As long as I don't have to see the mess, it is approved.

After doing a little cleaning, we took Brigg to preschool. Hallelujah, a respite from the constant nagging for him to go see daddy, go tell him something, needing to give daddy something. :) It is cute, but hopefully he'll get adjusted to daddy being home. It gets old.

I cleaned a bit more (laundry and kitchen) put Kallie to bed, thought about the lovely stack of books I have waiting for me, but got sucked into the computer. I picked up Brigg from preschool, we ate lunch at home, and then we packed up to run errands.

First stop was Maceys! I like Maceys.

I loaded up our loot. We had a treat of ice cream sandwiches, (I know, it was snowing. I had a craving.) went to the bank, I slathered Kallie in baby wipes while waiting at the teller because she was covered in chocolate, we ran to Blockbuster and got two movies and took one back, and dropped off the city bill. Then we went home.

I think we had a snack, played a bit, I put Kallie down for a nap, worked on the computer for just a bit, Brigg fell asleep on me, I put him down for a nap, Kallie woke up, I ran to the store for a few things I forgot (ARG!), and snapped this picture on the way home:

Nothing exciting, but I love their sign- they always have reminder tips on gardening. It helps me remember what I need to be doing. This says I should be pruning my fruit trees (check!) and the back says I should be laying my pre-emergent (put on my to do list).

I went home, helped Koby make this yummy food from his mission to Madagascar (this food was actually from the smaller island of Reunion), and we had two young teenage boys over for missionary month. This was the all leftovers so you don't get to see the food well. It was a sausage, tomato, jalapeno dish over rice. Mmmm, it is quite tasty. The boys ate it all and seconds. They gave us a lesson on the Holy Ghost and then they went home.

We got the kids to bed and then watched the new James Bond movie.

So there is a day in my stay-at-home life.

A few things that are not pictured: I cleaned up the broken pot with new flowers from the front porch that Kallie pushed down the stairs, cleaned up spilled grape juice all over the floor, had to send Brigg to his room a couple of times, wiped his bum a few times, wiped Kallie's snotty nose 233 times, changed 5 diapers, called a librarian back because of a damaged book, added a ton of items to my to-do list, turned up the heat because it was freaking freezing... the list goes on. Thank goodness you can block out a few things.

  1. Oh boy what a day! Isn't being a stay at home mom exhausting? This very morning I took all 3 of my boys shopping for a few hours and actually started to reconsider how many more children I really wanted! I'm totally jealous that Koby is home all day. I wish I could run to the store at naptime!

  3. Your days are more productive than mine. I feel productive if I actually leave the house!

  4. B. girl- I've already reconsidered how many kids I want but I already have one cooking so there is no going back! :) Oh well, I know I will want a ton when I am old so I have a happy, busy family and grandkids.
I plan on hopefully using a nap time or two to run to the store however that was a rare nap for brigg this week. I think he is done with naps and Kallie is starting to take short naps. I am still wishing to capitalize on a little errand time! I bought the cheese at the grocery store- "Happy Cow". Plain is better than onion. That is one of the belly bands we made. I love them, although some are more functional than others.

Liz- This was a productive day for me. I had "company" coming so I cleaned. Normally I just lay around and eat bon bons or leave the house(I have a hard time staying in), so I don't clean as much. I'm trying to be better though! :)

    Sorry, long comments!

  5. Ha, I love the first line of your entry.

I'm glad you documented your day. Honestly, sometimes at night I look back and think, "Now, I know I was busy today, but what the heck did I accomplish?" After a while things like "doing dishes" doesn't seem to add up as an accomplishment, even though it is.

I know John will miss Koby at work. Also, I love the picture of his sweet setup--and especially the quilted thingie hanging on the wall above it. Very non-manly. :)

  6. Shannon- I just asked Koby today if he misses the office and the camaraderie that is there. He said not really (it is the first week) but he said he misses John. :) It sounds funny when you say it, but he does. Anyhow, the funny thing with that quilted thing- it is totally in an odd place but it is there because it is hiding the big hole in the wall. I tried to take a picture of it but Koby refused to let me. The hole is from wiring the office. :)

  8. I guess I have to do this what I do all day photo essay. But when?

Perhaps then I will feel better about everything that I accomplish in one day.
